Adams Place started in 2009 when a group of crazy, creative students sat down together to talk about stigma. The stigma of mental illness that throws you in a box and slaps on a label “to be avoided.” The problem is, depression and anxiety can’t be avoided if they’re inside you.

There is plenty of information out there about mental illness. Important for sure. But for us, the power of change was in the stories of people our age who know from the inside out what it’s like to have depression or anxiety.

There are a lot of challenges that come with mental illness. But there are the upsides too, like our ability to think outside the box. To be creative, to change the world through the gifts that come with Crazy.  Our goal was to create a one-of-a-kind insider’s guide to take down the stigma of mental illness and replace it with hope. Because we did it, our stories can inspire you to do it too.

Our flagship project, Crazy: A Creative and Personal Look at Mental Illness, is an award-winning book of vibrant, diverse personal art and writings. Stories about mental illness from the inside out. Facts are included too, basic and in everyday language: information about depression, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, suicide, treatment and recovery, and more.

Our other major effort to date is the fast-paced, engaging video, This Is Your Brain. We created it with a high school audience in mind, but its message resonates across all age groups and demographics. We tackle stigma, anxiety, depression, and suicide in a way that educates and empowers. You are not alone in your mental illness—in fact, you’re in good company. Because crazy people can do some crazy awesome things.

Through additional videos and this website, we continue to put our crazy creative gifts to work bringing down stigma and replacing it with hope.
